Two neighbors trading a favor for a basket of eggs don’t need to route the exchange through the royal mint, get it certified, and record it in an official ledger. Not every value exchange needs the full weight of an official, certified currency behind it — some transactions are genuinely small, local, and low-stakes enough that informal exchange serves everyone involved perfectly well. Insisting on formal currency for every single interaction, no matter how minor, would add friction without adding real value.

Not every number a data analyst calculates needs to go through the full semantic layer treatment either, and knowing when it genuinely doesn’t is an important, underrated judgment call.
