One Story, One Chart: Avoiding Narrative Overload

She doesn’t ask the reporter to write faster or trim adjectives. She asks a harder question: which one of these is actually today’s story? The other three become separate pieces, filed for later or handed to other desks, because a reader who’s asked to follow four narrative threads in one article reliably ends up following none of them well. One story, told completely, beats four stories told partially, every time a reader has to choose where to spend their attention.

Narrative overload happens when a single chart, slide, or report section is asked to carry more than one distinct claim at once, forcing the reader to disentangle which pattern is actually the point. The instinct behind all three is usually efficiency or thoroughness — why build five charts when one dense chart covers the same ground? — but the cost lands entirely on the reader’s ability to retain any single point.

What’s Changing (and Why AI Is the Reason)

  1. AI-assisted dashboard and chart generation makes it trivially easy to add another dimension, filter, or overlay to an existing chart, which lowers the friction that used to naturally discourage overloading a single visual.
